Technically, this post should be called: "How to have a kick-ass time at SXSW, and drink for free..."
2009 was the first year that I attended the SXSW music festival in Austin, TX. It was undoubtedly one of the best weeks of my life. Blocked off streets, live music everywhere, and free booze.
I repeat: Free. Booze.
That's right kids.
Just remember to RSVP to the parties. Seriously. RSVP to everything. Scour Google and social media and reply to every party that looks happening. I highly recommend the Fader Fort (1101 E 5th St.) It's an outdoor super cool venue with - tada- an open bar. You can RSVP on their website: http://www.thefader.com.
Now that we got the important things out of the way, here are a few other tips I'd recommend if you're going to the festival:
- Rent a cheap apartment on Airbnb.com from college students who are away that week on spring break.
- Make sure said apartment is close to the festival. 6th Street is where the action is. That's where you want to be.
- Make friends with your cab drivers. It is nearly impossible to find a vacant cab during the festival. Get your cabbie's number, flirt with him a little, do whatever you have to do to ensure you have a ride home later. (And don't barf in his cab. It will cost you.)
- I'd also recommend catching a show at Waterloo Park (also outdoors and super fun, and they serve run + cream sodas - BOMB). The Mohawk bar rooftop is also a cool spot to hang late night.
